Considering the fact that I am only up here in Utah for 28 more days (WHAT?!), I thought
I would let everyone in on a couple of things I have learned from being away from home, and share what most people don’t ever tell you about college.
1. Family becomes a whole lot more important.
For a lot of people, the upside to leaving your hometown for college is getting away from your family & all the responsibilities that come along with it. When the parentals say that you’ll
miss them all year, they are incredibly right. I probably call my mom everyday, and still need her help with everything. I guess you never really realize how much they do for you when
you aren’t looking. I can say that my family has been my biggest supporter throughout my life, and I definitely took that for granted when it was right in front of me.
2. It takes effort to keep friendships.
When all of sudden you are separated by hundreds of miles between some of your favorite people, it doesn’t take just an instagram like to let them know you are thinking about them.
Although there is so much chaos that encompasses any college student, every friend still likes receive a
meaningful text or phone call. I can’t even begin to describe how lucky I have been to keep some of the friendships
I have back home. I still love that when I haven’t talked to someone in weeks, we can pick up right where we left off. (My awesome friends still let me call them and have breakdowns over the phone).
3. You don’t feel like a grown up.
Even though its portrayed that you become some new person when you enter college, newsflash,
ya don’t. Yes, we all do a whole bunch of growing up when we make a lot of decisions on our own, but hopefully we are all still our awesome selves. I have found out so much about myself being here at BYU, but I have also
found out that I am still my weird self, and could never even “adult”
(yep, used it as a verb), if I tried.
4. These are not the best four years of your life.
Okay, one, who the heck is done with college in four years?! Whoever you are, please come
find me and tell me how in the world you managed to pull that one off. Second, I definitely
don’t think spending your Saturdays writing papers counts as some of the best of times. It is definitely true
that you have more opportunities to go and do fun things, but I would like to meet someone
who has been able to do that and keep good grades. I will bow down to you.
Although these are only a few of the things I have learned while being here, and they may seem super pessimistic, I have always felt like this is the right place I need to be right now. Even though there are some hard days,
I can’t go by without mentioning the good ones. I have been able to create some of the best memories with the greatest of people, and have been fortunate enough to figure out the kind of life I hope to pursue. I am SO SO SO lucky
that my parents have created the opportunity for me to be here, without their hard work
I could never be getting such an awesome college experience. I am also so blessed to be attending such
a great school, I love BYU and the spirit that is felt here. I really doubt I could ever feel this comfortable at
any other place. It has truly been such a great experience, & I would not change anything.
